Jan. 11, 1984 Ordained as a bishop to serve as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minn.
Jan. 13, 1994 Appointed by Pope John Paul II as coadjutor bishop for the Diocese of Sioux Falls, S.D.
March 21, 1995 Named by Pope John Paul II to be bishop for the Diocese of Sioux Falls, S.D.
Feb. 24, 2005 Installed by decree from Pope John Paul II as bishop for the Diocese of Saginaw, MI.
Education: Earned a bachelor's degree for philosophy from St. Paul Seminary in 1966; earned a master's degree for divinity from St. Paul Seminary in 1976; and earned a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Catholic University of America in 1979.
