SAGINAW — For the last nine years, Father Wayne Dziekan has co-directed fact-finding trips to the US/Mexican border. He was exposed to intense and complex issues at play at the Border, especially the causes of poverty; issues that pull people to the United States; issues that push people off of their family land and out of their mother country; and border protection issues. Fr. Wayne and his co-director led a similar trip to Puerto Rico in January, 2010, focusing on the plight of the poor in that island nation.

WASHINGTON (USCCB) — The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops sees initial opportunities in preserving the principle of religious freedom after President Obama’s announcement Friday. But the Conference continues to express concerns.
“While there may be an openness to respond to some of our concerns, we reserve judgment on the details until we have them,” said Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, president of USCCB.

Bishop Joseph R. Cistone had an audience with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican on Friday. He presented the Holy Father with a letter and gift of $2,500, — to be used towards the pope’s charitable works — extending “sentiments of love and respect for the Vicar of Christ” on behalf of the faithful of the Diocese of Saginaw.
