The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, made the following statement regarding the death of the Most Reverend Patrick R. Cooney, bishop emeritus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord:

“On behalf of our entire community here in the Diocese of Saginaw, I express sincere condolences to Bishop Cooney’s family as well as to the faithful of the Diocese of Gaylord.  His priestly ministry and episcopal leadership were great gifts to the Church and his passing is a great loss to us all.

“I did not know Bishop Cooney personally before being assigned to the Diocese of Saginaw in 2009.  At that time, he was experiencing health issues and looking forward to retirement.  He was so welcoming to me and encouraging in my new ministry here in Michigan.  Since that first meeting, I had several opportunities to be with Bishop Cooney at bishops’ meetings, our annual retreat, and other happy occasions, particularly the installation of his successor, Bishop Hebda.

“From time to time, I meet people from the Diocese of Gaylord, all of whom have wonderful things to say about Bishop Cooney as a person and as a spiritual leader.  These remembrances and so many other good deeds accompany Bishop Cooney as he begins a new life in the Lord’s heavenly kingdom.  May he rest in peace.”
