SAGINAW —The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, today announced Debra Bierlein, Certified Public Accountant, will serve as Chief Financial Officer for the Diocese of Saginaw. She will begin her duties on December 1.
“It is with great confidence and enthusiasm that I appoint Debra Bierlein to oversee the fiscal operations of the Diocese of Saginaw,” Bishop Cistone said. “Debra has exceptional experience in financial administration and an outstanding reputation for integrity and leadership in her professional achievements and active parish involvement.”
As Chief Financial Officer, Bierlein will be responsible for the financial operations of the diocese, including the budget and Catholic Services Appeal. She will collaborate with parish leadership, the diocesan Finance Council and other consulting boards, advise Bishop Cistone on fiscal matters, and act as the bishop’s representative to parishes, boards and committees of affiliated organizations.

Bierlein, who most recently served as the Director of Accounting for Duro-Last Roofing, has more than 25 years of accounting experience in multiple industries working with all levels of management to utilize financial data. She has vast experience in preparing budgets, financial statements and management reports while supervising a staff and being responsible for internal controls, treasury management, audits and the implementation and utilization of the financial system as a whole.
Additionally, Bierlein has dedicated many years to serving her home parish, St. Elizabeth Parish in Reese. As a lifetime member, she has served on the Finance Council, co-chaired the Publications Committee, taught Pre-School Sunday School and High School Youth Group. She is currently a member of the Stewardship Committee.
Debra Bierlein holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Saginaw Valley State University (1980), and has completed graduate courses in industrial technology from Eastern Michigan University (1993-1996).
The Diocese of Saginaw ministers to 108,601 Catholics, worshiping in 105 parish communities, across Arenac, Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Huron, Isabella, Midland, Saginaw, Sanilac and Tuscola counties.
