Diocesan Parishes Celebrate the Night “When Peaceful Silence Covered the Whole Earth” 

Saginaw — Parish communities across the Diocese of Saginaw are preparing to celebrate Christmas, the most celebrated day in the entire Christian world, and the second most important feast in the entire liturgical year, behind only Easter.

In the year 1223, St. Francis of Assisi first commemorated the birth of Christ with the building of a manger in the church. In a story told by St. Bonaventure, St. Francis wanted all people to experience the profound joy of God becoming human, being born an infant in Bethlehem. St. Francis depicted this scripture scene by recreating the manger in a small town in northern Italy. From that time onward, Christian churches all over the world have been displaying the manger scene as the most significant symbol of Christmas.  Across the Diocese of Saginaw, parishes will display a nativity during celebrations on both Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. A vigil Mass is celebrated on Christmas Eve so that the faithful may come to Church and prayerfully call to mind the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in the dark hours of the night, “When peaceful silence covered the whole earth.” The vigil Mass is usually celebrated at an hour between 4:00 p.m. and midnight. On Christmas Day, Mass is celebrated to call to mind the joyful announcement made by the angels to the shepherds of “Glad tidings! A Savior is born to you in Bethlehem.”

During these joyful and festive days, when families and friends often travel long distances to be together, all are encouraged to gather as one body to worship Christ on the feast of His Nativity.
