Dozens of High School Students to Volunteer in Saginaw

    WHEN: June 16-21
    WHERE: Fulton Street, Saginaw

SAGINAW —From June 16-21 dozens of high school students will be busy volunteering and reaching out to the less fortunate in Saginaw as part of a weeklong service outreach. The program is called Y.E.S., which stands for Youth Encounter Service. Y.E.S. is sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw.  The program allows high school students to learn about and fight poverty through the perspective of Catholic Social Teaching.

“Including youth leaders and adults, we have about 55-60 people who have

signed up to volunteer this year”, said Mark Graveline, Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Saginaw. “Each year, young people are shown how difficult it can be just to get something to eat in a lower income neighborhood where in some cases there is no grocery store. Students also visited the local courthouse in the past to witness the ties between poverty and crime and to see how difficult it can be for those who cannot afford legal representation. Ultimately, we want these young people to experience and to practice Catholic social teaching which involves reaching out to the less fortunate as an act of love.”

Y.E.S. participants will spend part of the week mowing lawns, trimming bushes and painting. In addition, they will volunteer at various outreach organizations in the community. Evening activities include guest speakers, prayer and reflection on the experiences of the day.

The 3 homes are located on Fulton Street in Saginaw.

The Catholic Diocese of Saginaw was established by Pope Pius XI on February 26, 1938. Today, it includes 6,955 square miles across Arenac, Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Huron, Isabella, Midland, Sanilac, Saginaw and Tuscola counties. The diocesan 75th anniversary year of prayer and celebration for blessings past and yet to come began on September 8, 2012, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and will conclude on August 15, 2013, the Solemnity of the Assumption, the patronal feast of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw.
