628x471Dr. Mary Healy to Headline Upcoming Women’s Retreat about Women in Scripture

SAGINAW — Below are some of the upcoming events that will take place across the Diocese of Saginaw, including the women’s retreat this March with Dr. Mary Healy at the diocesan Center for Ministry. During the women’s retreat, participants will explore the lives of several faith-filled women in Scripture. Participants will also discover how much they have in common with these women in their desire for intimacy with the Lord. Dr. Healy is associate professor of Sacred Scripture at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and the author of Men and Women Are from Eden: A Study Guide to John Paul II's Theology of the Body. She speaks at retreats and conferences nationally and internationally on topics related to Scripture, the theology of the body, and the spiritual life.

WHAT: Women’s Retreat: Women in Scripture Inspiring Women Today with Dr. Mary Healy
WHEN: March 28 to 30. Registration and social begin Friday at 6 p.m. with first session at 7:30 p.m.; concludes Sunday at 11 a.m.

The women of the Bible have much in common with our own trials, burdens and joys, and with our call to steadfast faith in God, even in difficult times. This retreat will explore the lives of several faith-filled women in Scripture and show how they can serve as inspiring role models for Catholic women today. In looking at their lives, we will discover what Scripture reveals about the unique dignity of women and their pivotal role in God’s plan of salvation.
Option A: Full retreat with lodging; Cost: $150 semi-private room $165 private
Option B: Full retreat – commuter; Cost: $95 (includes all meals except breakfast on Saturday and Sunday)
Option C: Saturday only with lunch; Cost: $45

WHAT: Living Water: The Story of St. Gabriel the Archangel Church (a play)
WHEN: 7 p.m. on March 11
WHERE: Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church (St. Peter Parish) at 404 S. Wood St, Chesaning


On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded 80 percent of the city of New Orleans, devastating St. Gabriel’s entire parish and the homes of most of its parishioners. St. Gabriel the Archangel Church was scheduled to be closed along with 27 other churches in the archdiocese. The church was allowed to remain open only by agreeing to forego any insurance money. The pastoral team and the entire parish family set about the seemingly impossible task of trying to restore both the neighborhood and the parish. This is their story. WHAT: Six Dates for Catholic Couples
WHEN: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on March 7, 14, 21, 28 and April 4 and 11

The Office of Hispanic Ministry is sponsoring a bilingual Lenten couple’s enrichment program entitled “Six Dates for Catholic Couples.” The couples will share a meatless potluck dinner, watch a brief DVD (10 minutes long) and have the remaining time to discuss relationship strengthening topics on their own. Child care is available. The cost of the program is $15 per couple and includes the companion book and materials. WHAT: Multi-Parish Ministry
WHEN: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 13

Multi-Parish Ministry is quickly becoming one of the most widely-used models for ministry in the country. This “in-service” examines the various components of multi-parish ministry along with the strengths, challenges and essential elements that will lead to success for those involved in this emerging model of ministry. Although the principles and best practices will apply to multi-parish ministry, the context and examples will come from youth ministry. This is a professional development day for pastors, pastoral administrators and parish staff. The cost is $35. WHAT: The Beauty of our Faith: A Journey through the Creed with Dr. Dan Osborn
WHEN: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 15

Dr. Dan Osborn, Director of the Center for Ministry, will lead an in-depth journey through the Creed, bringing out the richness and beauty of what we profess about our Faith. This offering, which is open to all, is especially well suited for RCIA candidates and catechumens from around the diocese. The cost is $10 (includes lunch).

WHAT: Engaged Encounter Weekend
WHEN: March 21 to 22

WHAT: Old Testament Wisdom Literature with Rev. William Taylor
WHEN: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 12

This presentation will provide an introduction to the literary form known as Wisdom literature. It will look at the six Old Testament books normally included in this category: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job, Song of Songs, Sirach, and Wisdom. Cost is $35 (includes lunch).
