Father Vernon J. Sierminski dies at age 83

Sierminski_20130331BAY CITY — The Rev. Vernon J. Sierminski, 83, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Bay Medical Care Facility. Father Vern was born August 18, 1929 in Chicago, Ill. to the late Frank and Mary Ann (Styburski) Sierminski. He received his elementary education at Sacred Heart in Muskegon Heights and his secondary education at St. Joseph Seminary in Grand Rapids.

Father Vern continued his priestly formation at St. Joseph Seminary in Grand Rapids, as well as the Seminaire de Philosphie in Montreal and St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 2, 1956 by the Most Rev. Stephen Woznicki, the second Bishop of Saginaw, at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption in Saginaw.

Father Vern served as associate pastor at St. Hyacinth Parish, Bay City; St. John the Baptist Parish, Standish; St. Casimir Parish and Holy Rosary Parish, both of Saginaw; and St. Mary's Parish in Alpena. He was pastor of St. Anne Parish, Harrisville; St. Hyacinth Parish, Bay City; St. Agnes Parish, Sanford; and he retired from St. Maria Goretti Parish in Bay City.

During his priesthood, Father Vern served as Director of Bay Deanery Sodalities, Father Prior of the Columbian Squires of the Knights of Columbus Saint Stephen Council #4102, Spiritual Director for the Legion of Mary in Harrisville, Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Alcona Council #4335 and on the Priest Council for two terms.

Father Vern is survived by his brother and sister in-law; Arthur (Katharine) Sierminski of Norton Shores, three nephews and two nieces; James (Kathleen) Dawson, Thomas Sierminski, David (Patricia) Sierminski, Ellen (Jeff) Stamy, Jeanne (Ken) Wilson, nine great nieces, nephews and cousins and many dear friends.

Father Vern's funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Friday, April 5, 2013 at St. Maria Goretti Church, 2872 N. Euclid Ave., in Bay City. The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, will preside. A private burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Muskegon.

Visitation will take place from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at St. Hyacinth Church, 1515 Cass Ave., in Bay City. The Transfer of the Body to lie in state will precede the visitation time at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Ronald F. Wagner presiding. A parish vigil service will begin that evening at 6:00 p.m. at St. Hyacinth. Visitation also will take place on Friday beginning at 9:00 a.m. at St. Maria Goretti until the time of the funeral Mass.
