Funeral Mass for Deacon Masserang

FRANKENMUTH — Deacon Lawrence Masserang, a deacon of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, died on Wednesday, September 18. Deacon Masserang was born February 20, 1922 in Detroit, Mich., to the late Henry and Veronica (Deubel) Masserang. He was married to Minerva Patricia Masserang, who predeceased him.

Deacon Masserang’s funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 958 E. Tuscola St., in Frankenmuth. The Rev. Robert Byrne, pastor of Blessed Trinity, will preside. Burial will take place at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy, Mich.

Visitation will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23, 2013 at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St., and on Tuesday at Blessed Trinity beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass. During Monday’s visitation, the Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 5:00 p.m., and at 7:00 p.m., the Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, will lead a prayer vigil.


Masserang attended Assumption Grotto Grade School, and Guardian Angels and Edwin Denby High Schools. He attended two years of college at the University of Detroit and spent four years in apprenticeship in the tool and die trade at Henry Ford School where he attained journeyman’s status in that field.

He spent four years in the Diaconal Program at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. On October 20, 1974, at St. Dorothy Church in Warren, Mich., the Most Rev. Walter Schoenherr ordained Masserang a permanent deacon. As a deacon, Masserang ministered to the sick, homebound, and those in nursing homes. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, joining the Knights in 1946.
