Funeral Mass on Tuesday for Father Barney J. Janowicz
SAGINAW- The Rev. Barney J. Janowicz, 82, a priest of the Diocese of Saginaw, died Friday April 25, 2014 in Auburn, Mich. Father Barney was born on Sept. 14, 1931 in Beaver Township to the late Edward and Eva (Gielda) Janowicz. He attended Cherry School in Beaver Township and St. Hyacinth School in Bay City.
Father Barney received his secondary education from St. Mary’s Preparatory in Orchard Lake. He also attended Saints Cyril & Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake and St. John’s Provincial Seminary in Plymouth. Father Barney was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1957 by the Most Rev. Stephen S. Woznicki, second bishop of Saginaw at St. Hyacinth Church in Bay City.
A funeral Mass for Father Barney will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29 at St. Hyacinth Church, 1515 Cass Ave., Bay City. The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, will preside. The Rev. Richard Jozwiak will preach the homily. Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass.
During his priesthood, Father Barney served as assistant pastor at St. Boniface, Bay City; Saints Peter & Paul, Saginaw; and St. Hyacinth, Bay City. He was pastor of St. Valentine, Beaver; St. Mary & St. Edward, Kinde; Holy Trinity, Bay City; St. Matthew, Zilwaukee; and St. Francis Borgia, Pigeon. Father Barney was granted senior priest status in 1997.
Father Barney was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #414 and the Knights of Columbus St. Stephen Council #4102, where he served as chaplain.
