Holy Hours and Ecumenical Gathering among upcoming Faith Offerings

SAGINAW — Below are some of the upcoming events that will take place across the Diocese of Saginaw:


WHAT: The Word of the Lord Unites Us: An Ecumenical Gathering for the Week of Christian Unity
WHEN: 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 18
WHERE: Diocesan Center For Ministry at 5802 Weiss St. Saginaw
All are invited to come together for a morning of prayer for Christian unity and to explore Pope Benedict’s Verbum Domini (The Word of the Lord), which is arguably the most important Church document devoted to Sacred Scripture since the Second Vatican Council. Issued in 2010, Verbum Domini emphasizes the value of the Scriptures as the basis for ecumenical discussion. Speakers will include: Father José Maria Cabrera, Sister M. Timothea Elliott, RSM, and Dr. Toby Long, a medical doctor who received his Master’s of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. Cost is $25 (includes lunch). WHAT: Holy Hour with Bishop Cistone in Midland
WHEN: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan. 28
WHERE: Blessed Sacrament Church at 3109 Swede Ave., Midland
Since January 2012, the Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, has led a Holy Hour each month in parishes across the diocese. Bishop Cistone initiated the Holy Hours to prayerfully support the work of Planning Tomorrow’s Parishes, a grassroots planning process that aims to enhance the vibrancy of future parish life.

WHEN: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 25
WHERE: St. Thomas Aquinas Church at 5376 State St., Saginaw

WHAT: World Marriage Day Mass of Celebration
WHEN: 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 9
WHERE: Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption, 615 Hoyt Ave., Saginaw
Please join the Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, at a special Mass to celebrate World Marriage Day. All married couples and their families are invited. Those celebrating a significant anniversary will be recognized. Mass will be followed by a cake and beverage reception. WHAT: Argentine Biblical Scholar Will Present on the Gospel of Matthew
WHEN: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 1
WHERE: Diocesan Center For Ministry at 5802 Weiss St. Saginaw
The Rev. Sergio Ovando, a priest from the Diocese of San Jose, California, originally from Argentina, will be presenting on the Gospel of Matthew. Father Sergio has several degrees in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. This workshop sponsored by the Office of Hispanic Ministry will be a bilingual presentation. Attendees are encouraged to read the Gospel of Matthew in preparation for the workshop and are also encouraged to bring their own bibles. WHAT: Scripture Retreat: The Sermon on the Mount with Father Bill Taylor
WHEN: Jan. 31 to Feb. 2- Registration and social begins Friday at 6 p.m.
with first session at 7:30 p.m.; concludes Sunday at 11 a.m.
WHERE: Diocesan Center For Ministry at 5802 Weiss St. Saginaw
This scripture retreat will feature reflections on selected passages in the Sermon on the Mount, particularly those passages included in the Mass readings during Winter Ordinary Time, A cycle.
