Diocese of Saginaw Takes Steps to Reduce Cost of Maintaining Catholic Cemeteries

SAGINAW — Effective July 1, the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw will enter into a contract agreement with Tri-Valley Construction LLC to maintain the grounds of the nine Catholic cemeteries located throughout the diocese. The cemeteries include: St. Patrick/St. Stanislaus in Bay City; Calvary in Kawkawlin; St. Anne in Linwood; Old/New Calvary in Midland; Mount Olivet/Calvary and St. Andrew in Saginaw.

“This change will result in substantial cost savings that are necessary for the financial health of the cemeteries organization,” said Chief Financial Officer for the Diocese of Saginaw Debbie Bierlein.

All 14 employees of the Catholic cemeteries—eight full-time and six seasonal workers—will be laid off. They have the option of applying for one of four newly created Catholic cemeteries groundskeeper positions, as well as with Tri-Valley Construction.

“This is a difficult change to make because it impacts the livelihood of our employees,” said Director of Catholic Cemeteries Ken Groya. “We do hope to rehire some of our employees and we are pleased that others will be given first consideration for available positions at Tri-Valley Construction.”
