Priests Celebrate 65, 60, 50 and 40 Years of Ministry

On Monday June 17, eight diocesan priests were recognized for their years of priestly ministry throughout the Diocese of Saginaw. Celebrating significant anniversaries were: Rev. Michael Maher and Rev. Joseph Roach who were ordained 65 years ago; Rev. Noel Rudy who was ordained 60 years ago; Rev. Frederick Loos and Rev. Edward Konieczka who were ordained 50 years ago; Rev. Jim Carlson, Rev. Bob Deland, and Rev. John Sarge who were ordained 40 years ago.

 


The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, celebrated the jubilee Mass at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Saginaw. On behalf of all the faithful of the diocese, he expressed his appreciation to the priests for answering God’s call to serve. Those marking special anniversaries also were supported by the many diocesan priests who joined them for the celebration.


Fr. Michael Maher was ordained by the Most. Rev. William Murphy in 1948. He served as Pastor of St. James in Whittemore, Our Lady of Lourdes in Turner, St. Pius X in Hale, St. John the Baptist in Carrollton, St. Vincent de Paul in Bay City, St. Helen in Saginaw, and St. Hedwig in Bay City. He also served as Director of the Propagation of the Faith, the Extension Volunteers for Home Missions, and assumed other ministerial assignments before being granted senior status in 1992.


Fr. Joseph Roach was ordained by the Most. Rev. William Murphy in 1948. He served as Pastor or Assistant Pastor at: Sacred Heart in Merrill, St. Joseph in Saginaw, St. Andrews in Saginaw, St. Elizabeth in Reese, St. John the Baptist in Standish, St. Anthony in Fisherville, and St. George in Saginaw before being granted senior status in 1989. He also served as Diocesan Director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. He was granted senior status in 1989.


Fr. Noel Rudy was ordained by the Most. Rev. Stephen Woznicki in 1953. He served as Pastor or Assistant Pastor at 15 different parishes stretching across the Diocese. A few of these parishes included: St. Cecilia in Clare, Sacred Heart in Bad Axe, and Sacred Heart in Merrill. He also served as Associate Director of Catholic Charities and Assistant Director of Rural Life for Bay Deanery before being granted senior status in 1999. He currently serves as Sacramental Minister at St. Athanasius in Harrison.


Fr. Frederick Loos was ordained by His Emminence Cardinal John Patrick Cody in 1968. He served as Assistant Pastor at St Stanislaus Kostka in Bay City, Holy Trinity in Bay City, St. Helen in Saginaw, and St. Christopher in Bridgeport. He also served as Vicar of Hispanics and Administrator at Our Lady of Guadalupe before being released for pastoral service in Mexico. He was granted senior status in 2006.


Fr. Edward Konieczka was ordained by the Most Rev. Stephen Woznicki  in 1963. He served as Assistant Pastor at: Blessed Sacrament in Midland, St. Stanislaus Kostka in Bay City, and St. Andrew in Saginaw. He served as Pastor at: St. Cyril in Bannister, Queen of the Holy Rosary in Saginaw, Mount Saint Joseph in Saint Louis, St. Patrick in Irishtown, St. Josaphat in Carrollton, Our Lady of Lake Huron in Harbor Beach, and Holy Family Middle School in Bay City.  He currently serves as Pastor of St. Hyacinth in Bay City and starting July 1, will serve as Sacramental Minister at St. Mark in AuGres.


Fr. James Carlson was ordained by the Most Rev. Francis Reh in 1973. He served as Pastor or Assistant Pastor at 18 parishes stretching from Lexington and Birch Run, to Bay City. He was also a student at the Mexican American Cultural Center in San Antonio, Texas and also worked in the Department of Latin American Affairs for the Diocese. He is currently the Director of the Office of Ecumenism and will serve as Sacramental Minister at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Bay City starting July 1.  


Fr. Robert Deland was ordained by the Most Rev. Francis Reh in 1973. He served as Pastor or Assistant Pastor at 8 different parishes. He also served as Director of the Office of Church Ministries, Co-Director of the Permanent Deacon Program, Chaplain at Ss. Peter and Paul High School in Saginaw, Chaplain at All Saints Central High School  in Bay City, and Chaplain at Nouvel Catholic Central High School.  He currently serves as Pastor of St. Agnes in Freeland and Judicial Vicar.


Fr. John Sarge was ordained on July 15, 1973. He served as Assistant Pastor at: St. Mary Cathedral in Saginaw, Ss. Peter and Paul in Saginaw, and St. Mary in Hemlock. He served as Pastor at: Holy Rosary in Saginaw, St. Mary in Alma, Our Lady Help of Christians in Saginaw, St. Casimir and St. George in Saginaw, and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bridgeport. He currently serves as Pastor of Sacred Heart in Birch Run and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bridgeport. He will serve as Sacramental Minister at St. Joseph in Bay City starting July 1.
