Many Catholics Expected to Participate in Midland and Saginaw Rallies today

MIDLAND — Catholics from around the Diocese of Saginaw are expected to attend the Stand Up for Religious Freedom rallies in Midland and Saginaw at noon today. The local rallies are two of more than 100 Stand Up for Religious Freedom events expected to take place today across the country. Participants will gather in prayer and public witness in opposition to the HHS Mandate and in defense of religious freedom.

The Midland rally will take place at the Midland County Courthouse, 301 W. Main Street. There will be music, including bagpipes, beginning shortly before the rally begins at noon with an opening prayer and song. Speakers will include event organizer and attorney Shelley Storer; Sister Mary Judith O’Brien, Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw; Dr. Richard Poupard, DDS; and Pastor Jim Lang of Bethel Brethren in Christ.

The Saginaw rally will take place at the Saginaw County Courthouse, 111 South Michigan Ave. There will be a number of speakers including the Rev. Thomas McNamara, Vicar General for the Diocese of Saginaw.

The rallies are being organized by Citizens for a Pro-Life Society and the Pro-Life Action League in response to a federal health care mandate that would force Catholic and other faith-based organizations to pay for medical services that would violate their religious beliefs.
