nouvel_mock_election_webSAGINAW — The student body at Nouvel Catholic Central High School casted ballots today. The school participated in a mock papal election. As “cardinal electors,” the students received rectangular shaped paper during their religion classes, and after writing a name on the paper folded it twice and placed it in a receptacle (a barrel).

The students have spent the last several weeks learning about the cardinals and each student has “adopted” a cardinal to study specifically in religion class. A bulletin board in the school even bears the names of some of the “front-runners.”

“This is a great opportunity for our students to experience a sense of the global church,” said Nouvel Catholic Central principal John Hoving. “It also has been an opportunity for us to refocus during Lent on those things which are most important.”

Near the end of the school day, at approximately 2:45 p.m., the ballots were burned in a barrel on the side lawn. Two-thirds plus one was required for a new “Pope” to have been elected.
