Vicariates Restructured across the Diocese and Vicars Named to Represent Each Region

SAGINAW — The Catholic Diocese of Saginaw continues to take proactive steps to better serve the faithful. With the diocesan wide reorganization, Planning Tomorrow’s Parishes, now in year two of implementation, the Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, has announced plans to restructure vicariates throughout the diocese and appoint new Regional Vicars.

“After several consultations with the Presbyteral Council and preliminary meetings with the new Regional Vicars, the number of vicariates has been reduced from eight to five,” Bishop Cistone said. “I am pleased to announce the new Regional Vicars and their sphere of responsibility.”

The new Regional Vicars have been appointed to five year terms and include:

• Vicariate 1 (Thumb Area)
Father Rob Howe

• Vicariate 2 (Bay City Area)
Father Pat Jankowiak

• Vicariate 3 (Saginaw Area)
Father Rick Bokinskie

• Vicariate 4 (Midland and Central Area)
Father T.J. Fleming

• Vicariate 5 (West Area)
Father Pete Gaspeny

The Regional Vicar of a regional vicariate is a priest appointed by the Bishop to assist him in the exercise of the Bishop's pastoral office. The Regional Vicar is expected to know well the parishes within his vicariate, while giving support and ministering to the priests and pastoral administrators in his vicariate. Additional responsibilities include promoting activities in the fields of evangelization and ecumenism, encouraging vocations and representing the Bishop at important community and civic events. Through the Regional Vicars, the Bishop extends his presence throughout the diocese, especially into the parishes.
