SAGINAW — The Rev. Mason L. Vaughn, 90, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at St. Francis Home in Saginaw. Father Vaughn was born on May 18, 1922 in Bay City to the late G. Lee and Isabella (McLellan) Vaughn and was baptized at St. James Catholic Church in Bay City. He received his elementary and secondary education at St. James School and St. James High School in Bay City.
As a seminarian, Father Vaughn received his priestly formation at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids and Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 3, 1950 by the Most Rev. Stephen S. Woznicki, the second Bishop of Saginaw, at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption in Saginaw.
His first assignment was as an assistant pastor at Our Lady of Lake Huron in Harbor Beach from June 1950 to April 1951. He also served as assistant pastor at St. Joseph in Saginaw, St. John the Baptist in Standish and St. Mary of the Assumption in Bay City. In June 1957, he was assigned as pastor at St. Paul in Onaway. He also served as pastor at St. Mary in Port Sanilac, St. Anthony of Padua in Fisherville (Auburn), St. Stephen in Saginaw, St. Boniface in Bay City, Sacred Heart in Caro, Our Lady Help of Christians in Saginaw, Sacred Heart in Birch Run and St. Christopher in Bridgeport. In 2002, he was granted senior priest status and retired from active ministry.
During his priesthood, Father Vaughn served as Director of the Mission Office for the Diocese of Saginaw. He obtained a master’s degree in theology from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and completed graduate courses at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind.
Father Vaughn was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing, driving his Thunderbird cars, watching Notre Dame sporting events and taking daily walks.
Father Vaughn is survived by two sisters and a brother; Betty Sutton of Traverse City, Mich., Joyce Grant of Flint, Mich., Donald (Betty) Vaughn of Grandview, Mo., a brother in-law: Robert Couture and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters and a brother in-law; Ruth Couture and Mae (Mel) Rosebush.
Father Vaughn’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at St. James Catholic Church, 710 Columbus Ave., in Bay City. The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, will preside. The Rev. James Carlson will preach the homily. Burial will take place in St. Patrick Cemetery.
Friends may call at St. James Catholic Church on Monday from 1 – 8 p.m. and on Tuesday after 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Craig Albrecht will lead the vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the church.
