SAGINAW — The Rev. Julius (Jules) Anthony Spleet, a senior priest of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016. Father Jules was born Feb. 13, 1934 in Alpena, Mich., to the late Anthony and Della (Ruczynski) Splitt (Spleet). He received his elementary education at St. Bernard's Grade School in Alpena, and his secondary education at Catholic Central High School in Alpena.
Father Jules began his priestly formation at Jordan Seminary in Menominee, and continued formation at St. Lawrence Seminary in Mount Calvary, Wis., St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Md., and St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, Mich. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 2, 1962 at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption, in Saginaw by the Most Rev. Stephen S. Woznicki, the second Bishop of Saginaw.
Father Jules was assigned to open the first new summer missions at Glennie, Mich, shortly after ordination. He then served as parochial vicar at Ss. Peter and Paul, Saginaw; St. James, Bay City and Ss. Peter and Paul, Ruth. Father Jules served as pastor of St. Catherine, Ossineke; St. Gabriel, Black River; St. Francis Xavier Cabrini, Vassar; St. Bernard, Millington; St. John the Evangelist, Ubly; St. Columbkille, Sheridan Corners and St. Pancratius, Cass City. He also served as sacramental minister at St. Agatha, Gagetown; Sacred Heart, Gladwin; St. Paul the Apostle, Ithaca and St. Martin de Porres, Perrinton. He served as a member and chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, and attained Senior Priest status in 1999.
Father Jules' Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26 at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish, St. Helen Church, 2445 N. Charles St., Saginaw. The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, will preside and the Rev. John R. Johnson will be the homilist.
Visitation will take place at St. Helen Church on Friday, Nov. 25 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass. A Vigil for the Deceased, led by the Rev. Frederick J. Kawka and Sister Margo Tafoya, MSSp, will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday evening at the church.
